6 months in Asia

Our last few days in Vietnam were spent in Ho Chi Minh, a huge city of around 10,000,000 inhabitants. Very busy, with incredible amount of motorbikes. I didn't feel comfortable enough to rent one because of the craziness of the traffic.
We took a tour on the Mekong river to visit floating markets and some fruit farms. We left Vietnam by boat to reach Cambodia via the Mekong river. It was beautiful on the way.

Nos derniers jours au Vietnam se sont passés à Ho Chi Minh, une énorme ville de 10 millions d'habitants. Très active, avec une quantité impressionnante de motos de scooters. Je n'ai pas voulu en louer à cause de la circulation complètement folle! :)
Nous avons fait un tour en bateau et visité un marché flottant et des fermes de fruit le long de la rivière Mékong.
Nous avons quitté le Vietnam en bateau pour rejoindre le Cambodge. C'était magnifique tout le long!

The attraction of Mui Ne are sand dunes, huge sand dunes in the middle of no where.
The town being right by the ocean, we bought fresh see food directly from the fishermen on the beach and bring them with us to a local restaurant to cook it for us.
The amount of windsurfers is incredible, while on the beach you could see a hundred of them at a time! Very impressive!

L'attraction principale à Mui Ne sont de gigantesques dunes de sable au milieu de nul part.
La ville étant au bord de la mer, nous nous sommes régalés en achetant des énormes crevettes directement du pêcheur sur le bord de la plage puis les avons amener a un restaurant local pour les faire cuisiner.
Le nombre de wind surfeurs est hallucinant! On pouvait en voir une centaine en même temps!

We spent a couple of days in Nha Trang, it's right by the ocean, with a very long beach full of hotels and resorts. The interesting thing with this city is that this one in particular is full of Russians! There are several direct flight from Russia to Nha Trang, every single signs, hotels, restaurants is written in Russian. Some restaurants don't even have English, just Vietnamese and Russian.
We had some really good snorkeling there.
Then we went to Dalat, small town built by the French in the middle of mountains. We saw a couple of nice waterfalls.

Nous avons passé deux jours à Nha Trang, ville côtière style côte d'azur. Avec une plage interminable bordée d'hôtels et de grands immeubles. Cette ville en particulier est pleine de russes! Il y a plusieurs vols direct de Russie a Nha Trang. Tous les panneaux, les signes, sur les hôtels restaurants, agences de voyages sont en russe.
Certains restaurants n'ont que le menu en vietnamien et en russe, pas d'anglais!
Nous avons fait de la plongée en apnée, superbe avec tous ces coraux multicolores et poissons tropicaux.
Ensuite nous sommes allés à Dalat, petite ville fondée par les français au milieu de la montagne. Nous avons été voir plusieurs chutes d'eau.

Hoi An was by far the highlight of Vietnam. Lovely town with lanterns everywhere, really charming. This is where I rented a motorbike for the second time. I really liked it the first time and now I love it! We went to see the ruins of My Son. Beautiful temples in the middle of the jungle. It was great! A bit hot with temperatures above 37 C while in Edmonton, it was hitting records with temperatures close to -50 C
We also finished our PADI diving course and we are now both certified divers. It was 4 dives in 2 days with exercises with the instructor. So we didn't get to enjoy what was down there but we will more than ever for our next dive.

Hoi An a été sans aucun doute le meilleur du Vietnam. Jolie petite ville avec des lampions partout, vraiment charmant!
C'est là que j'ai loué une 125 pour la deuxième fois. J'avais vraiment aimé la première mais maintenant j'adore! Nous avons été visiter les ruines de My Son. Magnifiques temples perdus au beau milieu de la jungle. C'était super! Il faisait plus 37 à l'ombre! Pendant ce temps la au Canada, il y avait des records avec des températures avoisinant les -50!!!
Nous avons passé notre examen de plongée sous marine PADI. Donc nous sommes maintenant des plongeurs certifiés. Ça consistait de 4 plongées avec instructeur pendant 2 jours. Donc on a pas pu apprécier les fonds marins mais on est prêt pour la prochaine session!

We visited the old capital of Vietnam, it is a fortified citadel inside the city. The emperor used to live there. It had been entirely destroyed by American bombs during the Vietnam war. It is still under renovation today (or should I say reconstruction!)
We can clearly see the chinese influence that ruled over that land for over a thousand year before being pushed back in the early 19th century.
There are Buddhism temples and chinese architecture everywhere.
I rented a motorbike, a small 125cc scooter.
First time for me, with Sylvie behind, I have driven over 300 km so far. I love it!!!
So convenient here in Vietnam! We can see so much more, discovering the countryside and other remote locations. We are renting them almost everywhere we go now that I have tried it!

Nous avons visité l'ancienne capitale vietnamienne. C'est une citadelle fortifiée au milieu de la ville. L'empereur vivait ici. Elle a été entièrement détruite par les bombardements américains pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Elle est aujourd'hui encore en rénovation (ou plutôt reconstruction!)
On peut clairement y voir l'influence chinoise qui a été présente sur le territoire pendant plus de mille ans avant d'être chassé au début du 19ème siècle. Il y a des temples bouddhistes et de l'architecture chinoise partout.
J'ai loué un scooter 125cc. Première fois pour moi, avec Xiao à l'arrière! A ce jour, j'ai fais plus de 300 km en scooter. Je me régale!
C'est tellement pratique au Vietnam. On peut visiter beaucoup plus, se perdre dans la campagne et dans d'autres endroits éloignés.
On en loue pratiquement partout où on va maintenant que j'y ai goûté!

Ninh Binh is in the middle of beautiful rice fields surrounded by mountains popping out here and there. We rented bicycles to ride around the countryside. Very enjoyable moments!

Ninh Binh est beau milieu de champs de riz entouré de montagnes de pain de sucre. Nous avons loué deux vélos pour aller nous aventurer dans la campagne voisine. Moments très agréables!

We took a bus to Halong Bay city and embark on a boat for 2 days. The weather was not great, very fogy so we could not see very well the beautiful landscapes of rising limestones rocks recovered of jungle. And the agency where we booked the cruise lied about the destination of the cruise. So not such a great experience. ;) but we met some great peoples and fellow travelers to share experiences with while drinking beers.

Nous avons pris un bus jusqu'à Halong Bay city où nous avons embarqué sur un bateau de deux étages avec 8 cabines à bord pour 3 jours et 2 nuits. Le temps était pas terrible, trop de brume, ce qui nous empêchait de bien voir les beaux paysages de roches calcaires émergeant de l'océan et recouvertes de jungle.
Et l'agence par laquelle nous avons réservé notre croisière nous a ouvertement menti sur la destination du bateau. Donc assez déçu dans l'ensemble. Mais nous avons rencontré des gens super sympa à bord du bateau et bu plein de bières! ;)

Our first destination in Vietnam was Hanoi, the capital. There are not so many bicycles anymore but mostly motorbikes. Small motorbikes and scooters everywhere!
People are sitting outside small restaurants to eat on tiny stools and tables of less that 2 feet tall. Not so comfortable actually! :)
We wandered around the streets of the old quarter. Very charming and busy little streets.

Notre première destination au Vietnam était la capitale Hanoi. Il n'y a plus beaucoup de vélos mais énormément de motos, mobylettes et scooters! Un chassé croisé monstrueux!
Les locaux sont assis à l'extérieur des petits restaurants sur des minuscules chaises et tables de 50 cm de haut. Ce n'est pas très confortable à vrai dire! :)
Nous nous sommes baladés dans les rue très animées et charmantes du vieux quartier.

We spent 25 days in Wuhan with Sylvie's parents. We visited her grand parents at the hospital and enjoyed the Chinese spring festival with uncles, aunties and cousins. I even got scared playing with fire crackers (ok the thing would be classified as dynamite anywhere else. I mean 2 inches diameter!)
Otherwise, we haven't done anything special and chilled out every day doing nothing but eat and sleep!
It was a really nice break after the amazing but absolutely crazy and intense 7 weeks in India.

Nous avons passés 25 jours à Wuhan avec la famille de Xiao. Nous avons rendu visite aux grand parents à l'hôpital puis nous avons fêté le nouvel an chinois avec cousins cousines oncles et tantes.
J'ai même réussi à me faire peur avec des pétards (enfin le truc serai classifié comme de la dynamite partout ailleurs. 5 ou 6 cm de diamètres quand même!)
A part ça nous avons glandé toute la journée à ne faire que manger et dormir.
C'était vraiment une bonne pause après les géniales mais complètement dingues et intenses 7 semaines en Inde!
